Climate Considerations
Midland’s climate presents a unique challenge, with blistering summer highs reaching 90°F and winter averages around 52.5°F. Because heat pumps move heat rather than generating it, they are exceptionally efficient for our region. During the summer, they pull heat out of your home, and during cooler months, they reverse the process to keep your living space cozy.
Heat Pumps Tips
Schedule professional maintenance twice a year to ensure your system performs optimally during extreme temperature shifts.
Always hire a licensed and insured technician for heat pump repair to ensure safety and warranty compliance.
Check and replace your air filters every 1 to 3 months to maintain proper airflow and energy efficiency.
Clear debris, tall grass, and dust from the outdoor unit to prevent airflow restrictions that lead to frozen coils.
Use a programmable thermostat to manage your home temperature effectively and maximize your energy savings.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does heat pump installation cost in Midland?
Costs vary based on home size, SEER2 ratings, and ductwork requirements. We recommend requesting free estimates from local, certified professionals to get an accurate quote.
How does a heat pump handle both cooling and heating?
A heat pump uses a reversing valve to switch between cooling your home in the summer and providing warmth in the winter, making it a versatile choice for Texas climates.
Is a heat pump better than a traditional furnace for Midland homes?
Heat pumps are highly efficient for our mild winters. While furnaces are powerful, heat pumps often provide better energy savings and dual-function utility in a single system.
Why is my heat pump frozen outside?
A frozen outdoor unit is often caused by low refrigerant, a dirty filter, or a malfunctioning defrost sensor. If you notice ice buildup, contact an experienced technician immediately.
How long do heat pumps typically last?
With professional, regular maintenance, most high-quality heat pumps provide reliable service for 12 to 15 years in West Texas conditions.
Should I choose a ductless mini-split or a central heat pump?
Ductless mini-splits are ideal for homes without existing ductwork or for zoned comfort in specific rooms, while central systems are better for cooling the entire house at once.
Are there tax credits or rebates available for heat pumps?
Yes, federal tax credits and local utility incentives are often available for high-efficiency installations. Consult with your contractor to identify applicable savings.
How is a heat pump sized for my home?
Technicians use a Manual J load calculation to determine the right capacity based on your home's square footage, insulation, and window placement to ensure maximum efficiency.
What is auxiliary or backup heat?
Auxiliary heat acts as a secondary heat source that engages automatically during extreme cold snaps when the heat pump alone cannot keep up with the thermostat setting.
What happens during a professional heat pump installation?
The process includes removing your old unit, installing the new indoor and outdoor components, verifying refrigerant levels, and testing the system for optimal performance.
