Climate Considerations
Somerville experiences a variable, mixed climate where summers can be deceptively humid and heatwaves are increasingly common. With average summer temperatures hovering around 75°F, your air conditioning system works hard to manage indoor humidity and maintain a comfortable environment. When the temperature spikes, an inefficient or aging system can struggle to keep up, leading to higher energy bills and potential mechanical failure.
Because our winter temperatures drop to an average of 30°F, local HVAC systems are subjected to extreme seasonal stress. This temperature fluctuation makes regular professional AC service vital. Ensuring your equipment is properly maintained—or opting for a high-efficiency AC replacement—is the best way to optimize energy efficiency and ensure your comfort during our most demanding weather months.
AC Services Tips
Schedule your AC tune-up in the early spring, before the first major heatwave, to ensure optimal performance and energy efficiency.
Change your air filters every 1 to 3 months to prevent airflow restrictions that can lead to a frozen AC coil.
Keep the area around your outdoor condenser unit clear of leaves, debris, and overgrown vegetation to ensure proper airflow and cooling.
Consider upgrading to a smart thermostat to better manage your cooling cycles and lower your monthly energy bills.
Always hire a licensed and insured technician for any AC repair or installation to ensure safety and code compliance.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does AC repair cost in Somerville?
Repair costs vary based on the nature of the issue, the age of your system, and the parts required. Factors like refrigerant leaks, electrical failures, or motor issues dictate the price. It is best to request an upfront estimate from a licensed professional.
Why is my AC running but blowing warm air?
This is often caused by a dirty air filter, restricted airflow, a refrigerant leak, or a faulty compressor. If simple troubleshooting like checking your filter doesn't help, call a certified technician to inspect the system.
Is it better to repair an old AC unit or replace it?
If your repair costs are high and the system is over 10-12 years old, replacement is often more cost-effective. A new unit provides better efficiency, lower energy bills, and a manufacturer's warranty.
How long does a central AC system typically last?
A well-maintained central air conditioning system usually lasts 12 to 15 years. Signs of failure include frequent breakdowns, uneven cooling, strange noises, or rising energy costs.
What SEER rating should I choose for the Somerville climate?
For our climate, a SEER2 rating between 15 and 18 is generally recommended. Higher ratings offer greater energy efficiency, which can lead to significant savings on your utility bills over time.
How often should I have my AC serviced?
We recommend an annual AC tune-up. This includes cleaning the coils, checking refrigerant levels, inspecting electrical connections, and ensuring the system is operating safely and efficiently.
How do I ensure my home gets the right size AC unit?
Proper sizing is critical. A unit that is too large will cycle on and off too frequently, leading to humidity issues, while an undersized unit will run constantly without cooling. A professional will perform a load calculation to determine the correct size.
How can I lower my cooling bills during the summer?
Improve efficiency by keeping your unit clean, using a programmable thermostat, sealing window leaks, and ensuring your home has adequate insulation. Regular professional maintenance also helps keep the system running efficiently.
Should I choose central AC, a ductless mini-split, or a heat pump?
Central AC is ideal for homes with existing ductwork. Ductless mini-splits are perfect for retrofitting older homes without ducts or for zone-specific cooling. Heat pumps provide both cooling and supplemental heating, offering year-round versatility.
What happens during a professional AC installation?
A professional installation includes sizing the unit, removing the old system, installing new equipment, checking refrigerant lines, and ensuring proper airflow. The process typically requires local permits and adherence to safety codes.
