About Heat Pumps in Joliet

Living in Joliet, you know that our weather can be as unpredictable as it is extreme. Whether you are battling the sweltering humidity of a Midwest summer or bracing for a frigid winter cold snap, your HVAC system is the heart of your home's comfort. We specialize in comprehensive heat pump services, from professional heat pump installation to emergency heat pump repair, ensuring your family stays comfortable year-round.

Modern air source heat pumps have evolved significantly, offering incredible energy efficiency for Joliet homeowners. By choosing a cold-climate heat pump, you can enjoy consistent, reliable heating and cooling from a single, high-performance system. Our team of experienced, licensed, and insured technicians is dedicated to helping you navigate the latest technology, including ductless mini-split solutions, to find the perfect fit for your property.

Climate Considerations

Joliet’s climate is characterized by significant seasonal variance, with average summer temperatures near 80°F and winter averages dropping to 25°F. This mixed climate puts immense strain on standard HVAC equipment, making energy efficiency a top priority. Modern heat pumps are engineered to handle these shifts by moving heat rather than generating it, providing cost-effective cooling in the summer and robust heating performance even as temperatures dip.

Heat Pumps Tips

  • Schedule professional maintenance twice a year to keep your system running efficiently through both heating and cooling seasons.
  • Keep the outdoor unit clear of snow, ice, leaves, and debris to ensure proper airflow and prevent the system from freezing up.
  • Change your air filters regularly to improve indoor air quality and prevent the blower motor from overworking.
  • Be aware of your thermostat settings; avoid drastic changes to help your heat pump maintain a steady, efficient temperature.
  • Always consult with a NATE-certified or licensed contractor when considering an upgrade to ensure your system is sized correctly for your home's square footage.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does heat pump installation cost in Joliet?
Installation costs vary based on the size of your home, the type of system, and existing ductwork. Always request free estimates from local, insured contractors to get an accurate quote tailored to your needs.
How can one system both heat and cool my home?
A heat pump uses refrigerant to move heat. In summer, it extracts heat from inside your home and moves it outside. In winter, it reverses the process, extracting heat from the outside air and moving it indoors, even in cold temperatures.
Is a heat pump better than a traditional furnace and AC?
Heat pumps offer superior energy efficiency by moving heat rather than burning fuel. In Joliet's climate, a high-efficiency cold-climate heat pump can often replace or supplement a furnace, potentially lowering your energy bills.
Why is my heat pump frozen outside?
It is normal for a thin layer of frost to form on the outdoor coil during winter, but a solid block of ice indicates a problem. This could be due to a faulty defrost sensor, low refrigerant, or blocked airflow.
How long do heat pumps typically last?
With professional, regular maintenance, a well-installed heat pump can last between 12 to 15 years. Consistent servicing is the best way to extend the lifespan of your unit.
Should I choose a ductless mini-split or a ducted system?
Ductless mini-splits are ideal for homes without existing ductwork or for adding comfort to specific rooms. Ducted heat pumps are generally better for whole-home climate control if your existing ductwork is in good condition.
Are there rebates or tax credits for installing a heat pump?
Yes, many federal tax credits and local utility rebates are available for high-efficiency heat pump installations. Consult with a professional contractor to identify current incentives you may qualify for.
How is a heat pump sized correctly for my home?
A licensed contractor should perform a Manual J load calculation. This process measures your home's insulation, windows, and layout to ensure the heat pump has the correct capacity for your specific needs.
What is auxiliary or backup heat and when does it run?
Auxiliary heat, often provided by electric heat strips, kicks in when the outdoor temperature drops below the heat pump's efficient operating range or when the system needs help reaching the set temperature quickly.
What should I expect during a heat pump installation?
A professional installation involves removing your old system, inspecting or modifying ductwork, installing the indoor and outdoor units, and verifying refrigerant levels and electrical connections to ensure everything meets safety codes.
